- Looks like RAM prices may be moving lower as the year goes on.
- The following quotes are from a Wall Street Journal article
- published Feb. 14.
-
- " ....Historically, ...prices of the ever-expanding crop of memory
- chips fell about 25% a year. But, starting in 1992, memory companies
- had little to complain about [Way to go, Bill!], because huge increases
- in demand created shortages that kept prices high and profits enormous.
- Now that has come to an end, and complaints are flowing again: Memory
- supplies have now moved back into surplus, and memory-chip makers are
- unhappily moving back toward, for all intents and purposes, pricing
- their products by the bushel."
-
- "Spot market prices for memory chips have dropped one-third since
- November......."
-
- "Memory-chip prices may have further to go, too, given that they have
- been stable to higher for almost three years. 'The price cuts have
- only begun.' said Rick Whittington, a securities analyst at SoundView
- Financial Group."
-
- "The major reason for the price plunge is increased capacity. Memory-
- chip makers have been building production facilities all over the
- world at a staggering clip, and new production is coming on line just as
- personal-compouter sales growth is showing a moderate slowdown. The
- result, analysts say, is that memory surplus should last at least into
- the fourth quarter and possibly beyond."
-
- "In the personal-computer market, for instance, memory and the
- mcroprocessor account for the bulk of the cost of a system.
- ...... Consumers, of course will also benefit as prices of
- perosonal computers decline. Analysts said, though, that that might
- not happen widely until April, because memory companies generally
- set prices quarterly and may resist cutting list prices until then
- -- even if they provide some discounts between now and then and even
- if prices plunge further on the spot market."
